However, Universal dropped the ball on the presentation of this landmark series in three areas - namely the packaging, the opening credit music for each season and the indexing of the individual sets. First the packaging - the set comes in separate boxes for each season held in a slipcase. On paper I prefer this method of presentation to stacking discs in spindles like a jukebox (such as several of the CBS programs). You just remove whichever set you want from the case and watch. This should work, right? WRONG! First of all the slipcase is made of cheap thin paper which does not hold the boxes firmly in place and in addition is not secure at the bottom. So if you carry the set upright the boxes fall out of the bottom. So you either take out individual boxes or carry it sideways. Also, the spindles holding each disc are too small and the discs become easily dislodged in the case. So be careful in opening and closing each case and make sure the discs are properly stored.
Now as to the opening credit music for each season. For some reason Universal has not kept the original
opening music to each season for the DVD release. The most egregious mistake was in Seasons 3, 4 and 5. In Season 3 most of the episodes have original opening music (with the visuals of Squad 51 racing down the street to the pulse-pounding music) but for the remaining episodes the opening credits for Season 6 are used (the credits with the transmissions between the paramedics and Rampart). In Seasons 4 and 5 the original opening music was scuttled and replaced by the Season 6 opener. The opening music for Seasons 1, 2, 6 and the movies in the Final Rescues set were left intact. There must have been a reason why Universal tampered with music for the above seasons (copyright perhaps?) but i found these changes disappointing - as the old saying goes, If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
As to the indexing in each set, I found that the sets for Seasons 1-3 had more indexing features for each episode as well as an on-screen synopsis, helpful if you did not want to resort to the tiny blurb in the inside of each season set. The indexing for Seasons 4-7 was on the other hand very basic less intuitive.
Why the change? Who knows.
With the above now aired out, I must say that the picture quality is IMHO excellent for the most past. I partially agree with the reviewer who complained about the picture quality of Season 4 but this was not horrible as he mentioned. Yes, there were a few blips on the picture and the quality of the rest of the set was up to par so this was not a problem for me. I believe the picture quality throughout was just fine for me.
So in closing, I really wish Universal had put more TLC into the presentation of Emergency! being the landmark series that it was and still is despite being dated in certain regards. Because of this and despite the above caveats I would still heartily recommend purchasing this set especially if you find a fair price fir it. Just know you won't be getting exactly what you saw on TV. Still a worthwhile purchase - get it while you can.
