Expensive drives double the capacity of current consumer SSDs.

Samsung adds huge 2TB SSDs to its 850 Evo and 850 Pro families

Today brings good news for those of you with one drive bay and a hankering for lots of fast local storage: Samsung has just added 2TB solid-state drives to its 850 Evo and 850 Pro SSD families. The drives have the same features as the 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB SSDs in both families, but their higher capacities will cost you. The 2TB 850 Evo has an MSRP of $800, while the 850 Pro will run you $1,000.

These drives aren't the first 2TB SSDs to hit the market—something like Intel's DC P3600, a drive targeted at data centers, can be had for just north of $4,000. But they're the first consumer-oriented 2TB drives from a major company, and though their prices are high, they are roughly in line with other 850-series drives (the street price on 1TB Evo drives is just a bit under $400 as of this writing). Both drives are standard 2.5-inch laptop drives, and they're 7mm high, just like the smaller 850 drives. Those of you waiting for larger mSATA and M.2 drives will have to keep waiting, though Samsung's blog post says it plans to "expand" the 850-series lineups to address those customers.

The 850 Pro drives are a bit faster than the 850 Evo SSDs, though both are broadly similar for most tasks and they offer similar encryption features and power consumption. The biggest difference on paper is the stated durability and the length of the warranty. 850 Evo drives are rated for 150 terabytes written and have five-year warranties, while Samsung says the 850 Pro drive is rated for 300 terabytes written and has a ten-year warranty. Take that into consideration when deciding which drive to choose.
